East Lancashire Classics are delighted to offer this 1983 Ford Motorsport Developed Escort RS1600i. This very well known and highly respected car is presented in concours condition and is truly stunning throughout.
This incredible example will appeal to any Ford enthusiast or collector that is wanting to own one of the best examples of this iconic 'Fast Ford'.
First registered on the 1st August 1983 by County Garage of Carlisle, this car has remained in the care of RS enthusiasts and RSOC members since day one. It has escaped from being thrashed and abused or even modified, other than a Janspeed stainless steel exhaust system. It has been maintained and cherished to the highest level over the years, with each enthusiast owner painstakingly sourcing original new old stock parts to keep the car in the condition that you see today.
Around 2007 the car was taken back to a bare shell for a freshen up and to bring the car to it's current concours condition. Having been cavity injected with Tuff-Kote Dinol before first registration, the shell was found to be in a very good state. We believe that a new tailgate and door was sourced for the car at this time. All other panels are factory fit. The car was then treated to a very high quality repaint and even ten years down the line, the car is truly stunning!
The correct Sunburst Red paint is near flawless and the colour, consistency and depth of shine is incredible. All panel gaps are perfect and the car sits exceptionally well. The unique RS1600i decals are vibrant and completely damage free. A small and well disguised stone chip on the bonnet edge is all that can be found. The correct fitment for post May 1983 production headlights remain in perfect condition. The correct Hella driving lamps and lower fog lights are again perfect. All the rubber window surrounds and weather strips are still supple and crack free. The factory upgraded tinted glass is still security etched with the registration number. The front screen was replaced with the correct one in 2006. All bumper corners are excellent and free from scuffs. The unique rear Ford Motorsport rubber spoiler is perfect, with no lifting or distortion. The unique front spoiler is straight and damage and scuff free. The rear lights are again perfect. County Garage number plates are fitted front and rear and the dealer sticker remains in the rear screen. To remain in this stunning state is testament to the owners over the years.
Internally, the car is superb. The unique RS front sports seats were always in a nice condition considering the cars age. Being a well known weak spot on the RS1600i, the foam had started to pull away from the cloth. The current owner managed to source some new old stock material and the front seats have now been recovered and re-foamed. The result is remarkable and the seats have got to be the nicest that we have ever seen in one of these cars. The front seats are as new. The rears are excellent and damage free. The cloth has ever so slightly stretched, but they remain in a lovely condition. The door cards are excellent and unmarked. The carpet is clean and free from any stains or damage. The black perforated headlining is tight and damage free. The four spoke leather steering wheel is excellent. The dashboard is lovely and free from lifting and distortion. A very tiny hairline crack is difficult to see and hardly worthy of mention. The factory upgraded electronic stereo radio cassette is still in place and fully functional. The glass tilt and slide factory sunroof is crystal clear and is completely free from any discolouring or 'rusting' within the glass. These cars always had a very special interior and some 34 years on, it feels an even more special place to be.
The seven spoke Ford Motorsport alloy wheels that were unique to the RS1600i are all correct and the date stamp is clearly visible on all of the wheels, including the spare. They remain in an excellent and unmarked condition and all five wheels still wear the correct and nigh on impossible to source Dunlop D4 tyres with good amounts of tread remaining and no cracking to the sidewalls.
The engine bay is beautifully presented and correct and is home to the specially tuned 115BHP 1.6 CVH power unit. Date stamps can still be seen on the tops of the wings. The single bolt strut tops are correct for post May 1983 production and the factory sealant is clearly visible. The unique twin coil setup is still in place as you would expect for a car that is presented to this standard. The engine and gearbox benefitted from a refresh at the same time that the car was restored and has covered less than 4,000 miles since. All of these cars drove differently and some were better than others. This one drives exceptionally well and it is still lively in it's performance and a big smile is guaranteed! The gearbox is tight and precise and is a delight to use. The underside is lovely and clean and detailed to a high and show winning standard.
A very comprehensive history file awaits the lucky new owner. The original owners handbook wallet is complete and still contains the Escort RS1600i owners supplement booklet. A large file including old MOT certificates, receipts, old tax discs, service bills and so on is present. Having been featured in various well known magazines, a CD with the professional photographs is also present and is great to see.
Overall, we feel that this very well known and special car will be difficult to replicate or better. Enthusiast owned, cherished and loved throughout it's life, we know that examples of this calibre don't often reach the open market. Presented in a truly sensational condition, this is a vary rare opportunity to obtain one of the very best examples of this ultra desireable and rare RS Ford.
