Escort XR3 5 Speed
We feel that this car is something a little bit special. This very early 5 speed carburettor model has covered just 30,964 miles from new. First registered in May 1982 it remained with it's first owner for some thirty four years, until being discovered and purchased by it's second keeper in March 2016. There really won't be many of these cars around with under 31,000 miles and just two owners from new!
Bought as a gift from her husband, Mrs J Burtenshaw used the car very sparingly right up to the time that the decision was made to retire from driving. In 2004 and with just 30,893 miles having been covered, the Escort was stored in the families heated garage and it remained there until March of 2016... The family took the decision to re-home this superb example, and the car was removed from the garage in a completely rust free and remarkable condition. There is absolutely zero corrosion...nothing. Not a blister, not a bubble, no paint lift...nothing! Apart from being covered with a good layer of dust, the car was exactly the same as in 2004. Photographs are present.
Finished in Sunburst Red, this superb example remains in a remarkable and original state. Even the original colour coded none lockable fuel cap is present...we have never, ever seen one! ( the Black lockable one's where optional ). The paint retains a deep and consistent shine and the car presents beautifully. The factory panel stamps are clearly visible and very easy for all to see and original dealer PDI markings can be found on all components, including the little retaining screws on the brakes...The windscreen wipers are still original Motorcraft...just lovely. Genuine and original supplying dealer Perrys number plates are still fitted front and rear. The large rubber rear spoiler is still supple and perfectly straight. The tailgate decals remain un-faded and intact. The factory fitted tinted glass is superb and scratch free. The optional factory fit tilt and slide sunroof works perfectly and shows just a tiny amount of glass discolouration on one corner. The plastic wheel arch spats, bumper corners, bumper pads and over-riders are lovely. The correct and original Lucas headlights are crystal clear and damage free. The indicators and rear lights are again unmarked. A few small stone chips and two small indentations to the offside rear quarter panel do nothing to detract from this incredible and unrepeatable example.
Internally, this car is as close to a new XR3 as you will ever find! The Red Laser cloth seats are just remarkable and displaying no real signs of wear. They are completely un-faded by UV light and the cloth is still as tight as new. The bolsters are lovely and firm. Fitted with the very rare factory option of rear seat belts, the tiny factory stickers are still present and completely preserved. The carpet is free of any stains and still retains it's deep pile. Door cards are as new and the window winders are unmarked and displaying the correct grain. The two spoke sports steering wheel and gear knob are as new. The charcoal perforated headlining is unmarked and the overhead digital clock display is crystal clear. The dashboard is absolutely remarkable. It is completely un-faded and there are no cracks at all and it has never been repaired anywhere. Due to a spate of car radio thefts in the 80s, Mrs Burtenshaw decided to have the radio removed just to protect the car. We are in the process of trying to find one. The rear parcel shelf is lovely and straight and again it is un-faded and has never had speaker holes cut out. The boot carpet is free of marks and is again in excellent condition. Lift the boot carpet and the original factory applied colour code sticker is present on the rear panel. The original and correctly dated Cloverleaf alloy wheel is present and the original jack and tools are unused. The interior really won't be bettered.
The original Cloverleaf alloy wheels are all correctly date stamped as 1982. They have never been refurbished, which we find remarkable for a car that is now thirty five years old! They do show some small marks and light pitting, but this car is about originality and we would advise to keep them this way. Due to age, the car now wears five brand new Continental tyres, however, three of the original Pirelli P6s will be provided with the car and also two Pirelli P600s.
The underside is superb and completely untouched. All the original factory applied wax oil is still applied and the un-welded underside is clear for all to see. The rear wishbones still have the original L and R factory stickers...not replicas, they are original. The front downpipe is original and the full exhaust system from the front pipe backwards is an as new Bosal system. This is as good as they come in an original state.
In terms of how this car drives, it is as new. The automatic choke works perfectly and the 1.6 CVH engine is as quiet as we have ever heard. The 5 speed gearbox is as new. We have sold some lovely XR3's, but we have never had one that drives so tight and feels so well. The car has recently benefitted from a full service using all genuine Ford items, including new valve stem oil seals, which had dried up due to lack of use. There is a genuine Ford cam belt that will be fitted upon sale. With the incredibly low mileage and the long term storage, there is limited amounts of history. The car was always serviced by Mrs Burtenshaws company, which had a fleet of other vehicles. Various old MOT certificates are present and a few receipts. The owners handbooks seem to be unused and are in a virtually new condition. Two original and genuine Ford keys are present and one key operates all locks.
We feel that this is very likely to be an unrepeatable opportunity to purchase a genuinely lovely, low mileage and low owner Ford Escort XR3 that has not been messed about with and that still retains such originality. With prices for any Ford that wears the RS badge virtually out of reach for a lot of people, these early XRs are gaining momentum within the classic car world on a daily basis.
