We feel that it is fair to say that we are quite partial to a nice 205 GTi at East Lancashire Classics. Over the years, we have personally owned every colour...at least twice! Our love affair with these cars began some twenty five plus years ago and it has never dwindled. Even back then, it was quite difficult to find a good one.
The car that we have here is just a lovely, genuine example that has been maintained to the highest level and for the last thirteen years has only ever been used on nice sunny days. Best of all...it is still useable. In our opinion, it is as good as you will find without going to the next level and ultimately purchasing a car that is too good to use.
Finished in Cherry Red the paint work presents very well and the finish is consistent and free from damage. A few small and touched in stone chips may be found under closer scrutiny, but nothing that is worthy of mention. The panel gap is lovely and the factory fit panels still remain. The factory fit tinted glass is in excellent condition. The front screen has a small, filled in chip that it has had for many, many years and does not affect the MOT. All the wheel arch plastics and door trims are free from damage and still retain a nice deep colour and the Red insert is still vibrant. Headlights, rear lights, indicators and front fog lights are crystal clear and free from damage. All rubbers and weather strips are excellent. The factory fit vacuum sunroof works perfectly. The underside is excellent and the factory applied wax oil is still in place, leaving it very easy for anyone to inspect and appreciate.
Internally, the car is lovely and as soon as you open the door, it is evident that this car has been loved and used carefully. The half leather seats are excellent and the leather is free from the usual cracking. The drivers lower bolster has softened, but we are being picky really. The signature Red carpet is stunning and free from any damage or marks and has been protected by good quality over mats with the GTI logo. The gear knob is still bright and damage free and the three spoke leather steering wheel is in lovely order. The door cards and dashboard are free from any scuffs. The headlining is again excellent. The original Clarion radio cassette has been replaced with a Pioneer CD player and is in full working order. The electric windows and central door locking are working perfectly. The boot carpet is excellent and has again been covered with a GTi carpet. Any 205 enthusiast will appreciate just how nice this car has been kept.
The five original 15" Speedline alloy wheels are still present and are all shod with good quality tyres with loads of tread remaining. The alloy wheels themselves have got light marks, but they are more than presentable.
Mechanically the car is excellent and the enthusiast owners have never shied away from the upkeep. The original service book has fifteen stamps and where this finishes, the receipts and invoices take over. The car has been looked after for some years by renowned Peugeot specialists, Skip Brown. At 98600 miles they replaced the whole of the braking system, front and rear and this entailed discs, pads, pipes, screws, bleed nipples etc and they also replaced the rear torsion bar set up. The receipts for this work alone were just short of £2000. The cam belt was also replaced at 98000 miles. Every MOT certificate from it's first one in 1995 ( bar two when it was sorn ) are present and within the file. The complete owners hand book pack is present along with two genuine Peugeot keys and two immobiliser fobs. The history file is just so nice to see and it makes fascinating reading and tells the cars story. There is even a letter written from a Dr Withers, the previous keeper, to his insurance company back in 2004 stating that he was disgruntled that they would not give him his full no claims bonus on this car as well as his main car. It states that himself and his wife had purchased this car purely down to sentimental reasons, having owned at least twelve of them dating back to 1984. It also states that car will be used infrequently and only on sunny days!
Turn the key and the car splutters in to life like only a 1.9 GTi can. Drive it around town and it's a pig to be brutally honest. The heavy none assisted steering and the snatchy throttle will make even experienced drivers feel like a novice again. Get it on to the twisty back roads and it comes alive and all is forgiven. It drives superbly and just thrives on being used hard. We have grown up a bit now and we do know that these cars can bite you on the back side if you are not careful, plus our insurance company are not keen on speeding points. The instant grin factor still remains after all these years and it is just testament to why these cars are the ultimate 80s 'Hot Hatch' to many...even today!
To summarise. This is a lovely, lovely example of a very highly desire able icon. It can still be used and enjoyed, yet it wouldn't look out of place at any classic car show. It has been maintained to the highest standard and apart from the CD player, it still remains in an untouched state. We just love it and we are confident that the new owner will be delighted with it.
