A very rare, ultra desirable and genuine 1978 Ford Escort RS Mexico with matching numbers. Completely restored and rebuilt to the very highest of standards, this exceptional example now presents in a far superior condition to when it rolled off the production line over 41 years ago!
Genuine new old stock panels have been used wherever possible and wherever required. An invoice for £26,500 for the bodywork and paint alone is contained within the extensive history file and will give you an idea of the lengths and quality of craftsmanship that has gone into this restoration. A full set of photographs demonstrate the quality of this build. The fabrication work is remarkable and the paint finish is outstanding...it is just utterly beautiful!
This truly incredible Ford Escort RS Mexico is the result of one gents quest to own a car that he lusted after and one that he never managed to own in his youth. Having purchased a 1 year old Ford Escort 1600 Sport in 1979, it was always a Signal Green RS Mexico with a Black vinyl roof that he truly desired. Fast forward some 36 years and he set about achieving his dream. A genuine 1978 matching numbers RS Mexico was sourced in Diamond White and turned into what you see here today. The colour change is documented with the DVLA and is Green on the V5.
Completed in February 2016 and having covered just 1,780 careful miles since, there is not even one single stone chip to be found. The correct Mexico decals are perfect. Carello halogen headlamps are clear and free from any chips. The correct front quarter bumpers are remarkably straight along with the rear bumper. All window rubbers and weather strips are as new and the door mirror casings and door handles are free of any marks. The rubber boot spoiler is perfectly straight and unmarked. All glass including the windscreen is completely scratch and chip free. The Signal Green underside is highly detailed and ready to be admired on the show circuit. A truly stunning car that will withstand the most critical scrutiny.
The quality theme continues on the interior. The Black Scheel Roll-Top sports seats have been completely refurbished by Aldridge Trimming LTD. A new carpet, door cards and black washable headlining have also been fitted. The 5 dial cluster with white needles and RS logo is in perfect working order. A glovebox, centre console, deep dished 3 spoke leather RS steering wheel and Retrosound radio complete the look. Even today, this cabin is still a very special place to be.
The engine, transmission, brakes and suspension work carried out is as follows;
Engine: 1600cc Pinto rebuilt by Toovey Race Engines at a cost of £2,256 and included new pistons, polished crank, big valve cylinder head, new valves, fast road cam and Samco classic hoses. Aldon Automotive supplied and fitted twin IDF 44 Carburettors and carried out a full rolling road tune up at an additional cost of £1,796.61.
Transmission: 5 speed type 9 with longer 1st gear and 2 piece prop-shaft.
Brakes: Princess 4 pot callipers restored by Bigg Red, vented discs, new brake pipes throughout, refurbished servo.
Suspension: New single rear leaf springs, Bilstein rear shockers and Bilstein front inserts.
Wheels and tyres: Ronal RS 7x13 alloy wheels fully restored and powder coated and shod with Yokohama tyres.
This car really does drive as well as it looks and it sounds amazing! A true Fast Ford icon that has been improved with more power and more modern features. With only around 2,500 Escort RS Mexicos ever produced, it is difficult to say just how many survive today. Considered by many to be one of the rarest of sporting Escorts, this car will certainly not disappoint.
