Escort MK2 1.6 Ghia
This 1980 Ford Escort MK2 1.6 Ghia is quite simply breath taking! Having covered just 17231 miles from new in the care of just two previous owners, this example is unrepeatable!
Presented in a better than new condition and with a slightly modern and classy twist, this car will appeal to anyone that is looking for the best of the best, but also wanting something that is a little bit different.
Following a no expense spared and sympathetic restoration, this car has been taken to a level that you would not usually see on a Ghia model. No panels were replaced, no welding was carried out and no filler was applied to the bodywork. Starting with an already excellent car, the previous owner just wanted to take it to the next level...the result is quite simply sensational! The attention to detail is just remarkable and the high quality leather interior extends to the parcel shelf, bespoke carpet mats and boot mat and even a leather mat that sits inside the glove box!
To say that our customer/friend is particular, fussy or even a perfectionist is an understatement. In 2013 he sought the best and lowest mileage Escort Ghia that was available at that time. The car that he wanted to buy was removed from the market, due to the owner deciding to keep hold of it. After 12 months of regular contact, the car was finally purchased from a gent that had known the car since it was brand new and lived across the road from the first owner. Having always led a sheltered life and being protected overnight in a heated garage, it is fair to say that this car was as good as you could find.
As nice as the car was when it arrived, after 34 years it would obviously have the odd little mark. The decision was taken to make the car perfect. Following extensive research, the car was delivered to Jules Bodycraft in Wolverhampton for them to carry out a very high quality, but sympathetic restoration. Jules Bodycraft specialise in restoring E-Type Jaguars to a concours standard and they very often exceed £200k!
The Escort was stripped back to a bare shell, all glass removed and the engine and all running gear removed. The car required no new panels and no welding work was needed or carried out...it was basically a freshen up that was required. The car was repainted to an exceptional standard and it was decided to leave the inner door shuts, A posts, B posts etc in an untouched state. The car was then under-sealed and this was due to the intention of making it still useable and driveable. All the running gear was cleaned and powder coated and now looks better than new...the result is just remarkable!
As is very often the case, whilst the car was undergoing its restoration, our customer decided to source as many genuine and new old stock parts that he could find! After a cost of £10k we think he had pretty much exhausted every part that could be found! In our opinion and in our view it is fair to say that parts were sourced that didn't even need to be sourced...its just down to the attention to detail that was sought!
Whilst the car was being sympathetically restored, a sweet was found to be embedded on the front passenger seat and it was requested to be removed. Upon removal it took the top layer of the cloth with it. Not being able or content to live with that, our customer tried in vain to track down some genuine and original cloth...to no avail! The decision was taken to get the seats re-trimmed. The task was given to Aldridge Trimmers. A very high end and top quality chocolate leather was chosen, in keeping with the colour of the door cards. A Tan border was also added and we must say, it really does look and smell amazing! Along with the seats being fully re-trimmed and even on the backs of the seats, a bespoke set of floor mats again with a Tan border requested. The attention to detail didn't stop there...the rear parcel shelf and boot liner/spare wheel cover, internal wheel arches and even the wheel arches within the boot were also covered in the same high end leather. Not quite satisfied with that, a centre console and glove box mat were also made just to finish everything off. We feel that it just highlights the sheer thought, time, energy and planning that went into this car...there is no denying that the result is just sensational!
A brand new wooden Moto-Lita steering wheel just finishes the interior off and blends with the wooden inserts perfectly! Please note that the original steering wheel and brand new old stock original boot mat are included within the sale.
The original 'Sports' wheels are superb and include 5 brand new and quality tyres. It took 3 attempts by a professional alloy wheel refurbishment company to achieve the top quality result that was needed to keep with the rest of the car.
Mechanically the car is perfect! A bespoke stainless steel 4 branch manifold and stainless steel exhaust were sourced and the result is just incredible. The car sounds amazing! The original 4 branch manifold has been fully restored and is also with the car. We have never driven a MK2 Escort that feels quite as good and we have driven many...from 1100L's to standard and modified RS2000s...it really does feel and sound superb! The throttle is instant and the gearshift is exceptional...there is no doubt of its low mileage credentials!
Following the launch of the MK3 Escort and at the request of the first owner, one of the last MK2 1.6 Ghia's was sourced and registered by Hartford Motors of Lincoln on the 12th August 1980. Supplying dealer number plates still remain front and rear. The original supplying dealer handbook pack is present and complete and is in excellent condition, along with a fully stamped, original service book. A letter from the previous owner within the file confirms the story of this much loved example. Numerous old MOT certificates and Ford dealer invoices complete a lovely service history file.
Cars of this quality and calibre are getting ever harder to find, and love it or hate it, there is no denying that this car tests and exceeds the boundaries. Offered for sale at far less than half the price of the works carried out, this unique car is quite simply breath taking!
